Event Name IYCr2014 Symposium celebrating Barkla, Bragg and Shechtman
Start Date 17th Jul 2014 10:00am
End Date 17th Jul 2014 7:00pm
Duration 9 hours
Description On the occasion of the International Year of Crystallography, join us at the University of Liverpool for a full-day symposium dedicated to the science examining the arrangement of atoms in solids. The three separate sessions will celebrate the University’s award of an honorary degree to Professor Dan Shechtman (Nobel Prize 2011) as well as the contributions of Charles Barkla and Sir Lawrence Bragg. Charles Barkla, a Liverpool graduate and a staff member of the University played a key role in establishing X-ray Crystallography (Nobel Prize 1917) while Lawrence Bragg established its fundamental basis (Nobel Prize 1915).

Lectures are FREE but places are limited. Registration link: http://www.liv.ac.uk/events/science-and-society/form.php

Programme of the event

Session one 10:00-12:30

Chair: Professor Ronan McGrath, University of Liverpool

Professor Andy Cooper (Chemistry, Liverpool) Crystallography of porous organic systems
Professor Stephen Pennycook (University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN) Real space crystallography with aberration-corrected electron microscopy
Professor Danny Shechtman (Technion, Israel) Discovery of icosahedral phase and the field of quasi-periodic crystals

The session will be followed by lunch and an opportunity to view the Victoria Gallery & Museum collections.

Session two 13:45-15:55

Chair: Professor Samar Hasnain, University of Liverpool

Professor Tetsuya Ishikawa (RIKEN, Japan) X-ray lasers - new horizons of crystallography
Barkla Lecture (sponsored by RIGAKU): Professor Gautam R. Desiraju (IISc, Bangalore, India) Crystal engineering: From molecules to crystals.

Tea and coffee will be served after the session.

Session three 16:15-18:00

Chair: Professor Stephen Holloway, University of Liverpool

Bragg Lecture (sponsored by DECTRIS): Professor Sir Tom Blundell (Cambridge) The contribution of crystallography to biology and drug discovery: Something to Bragg about!
Reflections from Patience Thomson, daughter of Sir Lawrence Bragg
Crystallography & Society: Presentations by Vivien Perutz and Dr Michele Zema.

Vote of thanks: Professor Ian Greer

The session will be followed by a drinks reception.
