Many initiatives have been and are being organized to involve schoolchildren at Mudaliarpet, Pondicherry (India) into crystallography on the occasion of IYCr2014.

1. At first, the students were given a brief introduction on various crystals, which made them think about how crystals are formed.

2. Following this, a team of students were selected for a project on Crystal Growth - investigating the size, shape and number of crystals formed, taking various substances such as table salt, sugar, epsom salt, borax, potassium nitrate and alum. 

3. A Radio Talk was given by the teacher and the students on the "International Year of Crystallography".

4. A lecture was given on the topic to the school students, following which a demonstration -cum- exhibition, along with a poster presentation by the teacher is to be arranged for view for the public around the school locale. 

5. A next attempt to telecast the above in the television is made.

6. Students of our school are participating in the IYCr2014 Crystal Growing Competition. 

Eine neue Kluft im Steinbruch Eibenstein lieferte beachtliche Kalzitkristalle, z.T. Phantombildungen und Kalzite in Chalcedon.

Aus Motlas O.Ö. wurden herrliche Quarz-Stufen, Andalusit, Beryll, Schörl und Orthoklas angekauft.

In der Mittelvitrine werden aus der Studiensammlung des Museum besondere Stufen ausgestellt: Einzel-Quarzkristalle und Stufen (auch Amethyst), sowie seltene Mineralien wie Amstallit, bzw. aus dem Fundort Kottaun; ferner Beryll, Chalcedon, Schörl u.a.

Ebenso wurde der größte Feldspatkristall Österreichs aus Wanzenau bei Rosenburg dem Krahuletz-Museum übergeben und ist dort im Rahmen der Mineralien-Dauerausstellung zu sehen.

You cannot fit Science in one box? Think again! Logix Creative and Daaa Haus have been entrusted with the conceptualisation, design and fabrication of the science installation in Pjazza St George during the Science In The City 2014 and Notte Bianca 2014 happenings on Saturday 26th September and Saturday 4th October 2014 respectively - and, judging from the blue prints, they have done just that!

Introducing AMAZE²: a massive installation in the shape of a giant cube housing a maze that plans to portray the various elements of science in a fun and eclectic way. The Installation, a journey through various rooms arranged as a full size maze, will take the visitor through various representations and interactive exhibits of science. From the weather to the big bang, from the earth to the human body, from solar energy to renewable energy, no stone will be left unturned. Logix/Daaa are also thinking outside the box – literally, as around the installation various exhibits featuring Lufthansa, with an array of interactive displays designed to experience the science around flight engineering, a car manufacturer displaying a fleet of EV vehicles and a Beer manufacturer sponsoring a Beer Haus experiment bar will offer patrons tons of entertainment while they warm up before cooling down after the experience of the AMAZE2 cube.

This cube will contain a tech-biogarden where the audience can play with devices and make their own sounds with the living systems. An art installation by IZAXA in collaboration with biochemist Rosalin Bonetta, Laboratory of Biochemistry and Protein Science (Dept. of Physiology and Biochemistry, University of Malta), under the supervision of Professor G. Hunter and Dr T. Hunter, invites participants to celebrate the 100th anniversary since the start of X-ray Crystallography. Another area will house artefacts inspired by the CERN particle accelerator that's trying to explain the wonders of the Universe.

AMAZE² will offer visitors of all ages an accessible exhibition of educational displays that puts science in their hands. With the aid of Science in the City Consortium, Notte Bianca, Biopilot, Izaxa and V.18 Logix/Daaa will fit Science in the box and mix it with art and culture to form an epic assault on the senses. Everyone will be truly AMAZED – squared.

The opening is scheduled on June 23rd, with the presence of Professor Robert Huber, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. The results of the Photo Contest will be announced.

The Australian satellite of the IYCr2014 photo competition Crystallography in Everyday Life saw Crystal 29 conference delegates select their favorite images from more than 130 entries submitted world-wide.

The 15 stunning images celebrate the wonder of crystallography, symmetry and crystals as symbolized in the places, objects and experiences of everyday life and will now form part of the traveling exhibition around Australia.

Graziano Lolli from Italy won the first prize in this category with a photo of "romanesco broccoli".

The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History proudly announces its upcoming exhibition: CRYSTALLOGRAPHY: Where Art & Science Collide, on display from September 18, 2014 –January 17, 2015.

On Thursday, September 18th, at 6 PM, a free public lecture featuring David Gardner, Master Jeweler and Gemologist, was followed by an open reception with refreshments and gallery viewing.

This year marks the centenary of the birth of modern crystallography, a science studying the composition and structure of crystals. Crystallographers provide fundamental knowledge and technology essential for the development of new materials.

Crystallography has become the very core of structural science, revealing the structure of DNA, allowing us to understand and fabricate computer memories, showing us how proteins are created in cells, and helping scientists to design powerful new materials and drugs. It permeates our daily lives and is essential in agro-food, aeronautics, automobiles, cosmetics, and computers, as well as the electro-mechanical, pharmaceutical and mining industries. Because of the beauty and symmetry of crystals, they also figure prominently in architecture, art forms, and jewelry.

This exhibition will offer visitors an overview of the many applications of the science of crystallography. Materials on display will include stunning specimens from the Museum’s extensive mineral collection and will showcase examples of crystals used in art and jewelry.

This exhibit was made possible in part through Hotel Tax Revenue funded from the City of College Station through the Arts Council of Brazos Valley and through David Gardner’s Jewelers. The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History is committed to promoting science, and cultural and natural history with the integration of art in exhibits and educational programs.

The Natural History Museum "Dr. Carlos A. Torres de la Llosa" of Montevideo, Uruguay has created a special exhibit of Crystals and Crystal structures using its own minerals collection to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography 2014. As part of the lecture series organized by the Campus of Caparica, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography, on October 2nd, Prof Guenter Schwarz is giving a lecture on Molybdenum Biochemistry: from neurodegeneration to synaptogenesis and blood pressure.

Professor Guenter Schwarz (Center for Molecular Medicine, Univ. Cologne, Germany) was born in 1970 in Suhl. He studied biology at the University of Szeged (Hungary) and Technical University of Braunschweig (Germany), where he also completed his Ph.D. and habilitation. From 2000-2001, he was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Center for Molecular Medicine and Structural Biology, with Prof. Dr. Schindelin (State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA). In 2005 he got appointed as Associate Professor for Biochemistry at University of Cologne. Since 2009 he is Full Professor for Biochemistry and Vice Chair of the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne. Since 1995, Professor Schwarz has been honoured with numerous awards, notably the:-“Novartis-Preis” for therapy-related pharmacological research given by the German society of pharmacology and toxicology (in 2003);-“Max-von-Laue-Preis” for structural biology given by the German Society of Crystallography (in 2005);-“Horst-Bickel-Award” for the development of novel therapies in the field of inborn errors in metabolism given by Arbeitsgem. für Pediatrische Stoffwechselstörung (in 2009) and;-Innovation Award of the State North Rhine Westphalia for the development of a therapy to treat Molybdenum Cofactor deficiency (in 2010).

The exhibition "Crystals - Artwork of Nature" (original title: "KRISTALLE - Kunstwerke der Natur") will take the visitors on an exciting journey through crystals and the structure of matter using models and elaborated computer graphics. In the spirit of the International Year of Crystallography 2014, this exhibition aims at disseminating crystallography and the knowledge of the structure of matter to the general public, and providing information on history and application of crystallography.

The exhibition tours through all of the federal states of Austria. This tour stop takes place at the wonderful city of Gmunden in Upper Austria, located at the lake Traunsee and famous for its ceramic production.

After the official opening on the 1st of October, there will be hourly guided tours for school classes and general public through the exhibition during opening times (8:00-21:00) until the 3rd of October.

Furthermore, at this occasion, it will also be possible to get the Austrian commemorative postage stamp celebrating IYCr (which is shown on this homepage at http://www.iycr2014.org/events/postage_stamps/austrian-stamp). To celebrate the UN International Year of Crystallography 2014, the association AMMS-InterESST Strasbourg (Association for Museology and Scientific Mediation - Strasbourg's Alumni network of the European Studies of Society Science, and Technology), with various collaborators, principally the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology (IGBMC), have the honor to present the multi-axial project “La Cristallographie et nous - Crystallography in our life”.

The project discusses mainly about human health and proposes to discover the vast field of crystallography. Our goal: to celebrate the crystallography year as charted by the IYCr2014 program but also as a "traditional" science in the Strasbourg University and as a significant contribution to the scientific reputation of the city of Strasbourg and the region of Alsace. Our wish is to make this event a prelude to the International Year of Light in 2015.

The project includes: 

1. A travelling exhibition in Alsace called "La Cristallographie et Nous" (Crystallography in our life) during 2014 and 2015. The exhibition will first move on three of Strasbourg’s University campus: “Central Campus”, "Illkirch Campus", "Medicine Campus" and then will continue to travel in other Alsatian towns. It will start on the 2nd October 2014 at the Le Bel Institute, and will end in May 2015. The project focuses on three features: crystallography in our daily life, crystallography as a central tool for biology, medicine and pharmacology and crystallography and arts.
2. Labs tours in the new “Integrative Biology Center” located in Illkirch during the month of November 2014. Especially for this occasion, there will be a mini-exhibition in the building.
3. Tasting and prevention workshops called "Crystals in our dinner plates" focused on discovering crystals in our daily food will be proposed during the french national science festival, "Fete de la Science2014" on the 17, 18 and 19 October 2014. Elaborated in collaboration with the University Service of Medicine and Health Promotion (SUMPS) and the IGBMC, those workshops will present different crystals in our food and try to answer to these questions: Are they good for our health? What are the purpose of vitamins and minerals in our diet? How the researchers study these vitamins and their effects on our health? 
4. A publication about the project and the exhibition.

Dans le cadre de l’Année Internationale de la Cristallographie 2014 de l’ONU (IYCr2014), l’AMMS - InterESST Strasbourg (Association de Muséologie et Médiation Scientifique - Réseau Alumini du programme European Studies of Society, Science, and Technology de Strasbourg) en collaboration principale avec le Docteur Dino Moras de l’IGBMC (Institut de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire) présentera le projet multiaxial sur la thématique de l’Homme et sa santé qui s’intitule « La cristallographie et nous » pour célébrer la cristallographie ainsi que son lien fort avec l’Université de Strasbourg et sa contribution au rayonnement scientifique de Strasbourg et de l’Alsace durant l’année universitaire 2014-2015 principalement sur le campus Central, le campus d’Illkirch et le campus de Médecine. L’accent sera mis sur le rôle de la cristallographie dans notre quotidien tout en appuyant sur son utilité en biologie, médecine et pharmacologie et en mettant en évidence ses liens vers d’autres domaines tels que l’art, les mathématiques, l’alimentation, ...

Ce projet comportera une exposition itinérante sur toute l’Alsace durant l’année 2014–2015, des visites de laboratoires de recherche du nouveau Centre de Biologie Intégrative à Illkirch et des ateliers de dégustation et de prévention axés sur la découverte pendant la Fête de la Science 2014. 

L’exposition « La cristallographie et nous ». Elle va itinérer dans un premier temps sur les campus strasbourgeois (central, médecine, Illkirch) et ensuite se déplacera dans les agglomérations alsaciennes. Elle commencera à partir du 2 octobre 2014 à l'Institut Le Bel, et prendra fin en mai 2015. Notre volonté est qu’elle soit aussi une introduction à l’Année Internationale de la Lumière en 2015.

As part of the lecture series organized by the Campus of Caparica, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography, on October 8th, Dr João M. Dias is giving a lecture on Revolutionising GPCR crystallography and implications for structure-based drug discovery.

Doctor João M. Dias is a principal scientist at Heptares Therapeutics, leading the crystallographic work on the Muscarinic M1 receptor to target Alzheimer’s disease and pioneering a structure-based drug discovery approach to GPCRs.

João is an all-round hands-on crystallographer with experience from gene-to-structure with more than 15 years of experience, including 7 years of industrial experience.João did his Ph.D. in Structural Biology studying enzymes and metalloproteins at the New University of Lisbon with Prof. Maria João Romão and at the Max-Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich, working directly with Prof. Robert Huber (Nobel prize of chemistry in 1988 for the determination of the three dimensional structure of a photosynthetic reaction centre together with Hartmut Michel and Johann Deisenhofer). After his PhD, João did a postdoc at Merck-Serono, in Geneva working on the structural genomics pipeline, and solving the structure of complexes of human chemokines with novel chemokine binding proteins. Before joining Heptares, João was a research associate at Scripps, San Diego, where he determined the structure of a novel-neutralizing antibody in complex with the ebolavirus glycoprotein, elucidating the conformational epitope suitable as target for vaccines against ebolavirus.João has more than 25 papers in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to 17 structures deposited in the Protein Databank.

From Molecules to Medicine: How Structure Helps Cure Disease

Learn about the quest to develop therapies for the major age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

 Presenter:  Dr. Greg Petsko is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.  His research interests include protein structure and function and the development of methods to treat age-related neurodegenerative diseases, including ALS (Lou Gehrig's), Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

 Moderator: Dr. Martha Teeter is the current president of the American Crystallographic Association and demonstrated the first direct phasing of a protein structure with Wayne Hendrickson and the cooling of a protein with Håkon Hope, both techniques now routine in structural biology.  She has promoted the International Year of Crystallography 2014 in the Americas.

This exhibition 'Kristallen verhelderd' aims at giving an overview of the history of crystallography (including a selected exhibit of minerals), introduce the work of Laue and the Braggs, present the pionieering work performed at Ghent University and show some recent applications of crystallography in solid state physics. 

The exhibition is aimed at both secondary schools, researchers and the general public. It is organized by the Museum of the History of Sciences at Ghent University, in collaboration with the Department of  Solid State Sciences and the Department of Geology and Soil Sciences.

As part of the celebrations for the International Year of Crystallography 2014, Acad. Gligor Jovanovski delivered a 45 min lecture entitled: “Crystallography from Laue and Bragg to Nowadays” at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MASA), on the occasion of the celebrations for its 47th anniversary. The presentation comprised a brief explanation of the basic principles of crystallography as well as contained retrospectives of the Nobel Laureates whose findings connected and/or correlated with Crystallography reshaped our understanding and knowledge in the fields of Chemistry, Physics and Physiology or Medicine. At the end, a brief explanation of the achievements of the members of Crystallography Group in Macedonia was given.

The exhibition 'La cristallographie au quotidien" (Crystallography in daily life) will take place in the Hall of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Namur, as part of  the 20th Festival Nature Namur.

The Mineral Collection at the MASA includes more than 150 mineral specimens collected from more than 50 different localities within R. Macedonia. All visitors were fascinated by the beauty of the mineral crystals that are displayed in the best designed mineral collection in Macedonia, although the mineral collection at the Institute of Chemistry, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University contains a larger number of mineral specimens (around 400) and mineral species (around 80).

Entrance to both mineral collections is free for all visitors.

A “Thank-you letter” was issued by MASA and delivered to Acad. Gligor Jovanovski, Prof. Dr. Blažo Boev and Prof. Dr. Petre Makreski.

The symposium will be followed by a poster session.  

This one-day symposium will provide an opportunity for structural biologists from throughout the Chicago area to meet, network and learn about each other's research. The poster session will also provide an opportunity for graduate students, postdocs, undergraduates and others to present their work in a forum where they can meet others with expertise in protein science.

Crystals - known to everybody as gems, snow crystals, or salt grains - are widespread in the nature around us. The investigation of their structure and properties means looking inside the intimate of atom geometries - a look contributing to the scientific development of chemistry, solid state physics, Earth sciences, and even, surprisingly, biology and medicine. A century has passed since the crystals first revealed their secrets. In the meantime crystallography has become the pillar of the atomic and molecular sciences, showing us the structure of DNA, allowing the comprehension and the development of computer memories, visualizing the formation of proteins within cells, and yielding ever new materials and drugs.

The exhibition organized at the University of Parma in collaboration with IMEM-CNR wishes to celebrate the theoretical and applied aspects of crystallography. Cette exposition du Muséum d'Histoire naturelle de La Rochelle est labellisée « Année internationale de la cristallographie 2014 » sous le haut patronage de Madame Geneviève Fioraso, Secrétaire d'état à l'Enseignement Supérieur et à la Recherche.

La partie centrale de l’exposition est réservée à la vie, au voyage géologique et aux travaux scientifiques de Louis-Benjamin Fleuriau de Bellevue (1761-1852). Il a reçu une formation de physicien naturaliste à Genève, une des académies les plus influentes de l’Europe continentale où ses professeurs participent à l’essor des nouvelles disciplines que sont la géologie et la minéralogie. L’élève Fleuriau devient à son tour un acteur de la cristallographie naissante, de la nouvelle minéralogie qui en découle et de la géologie moderne fondée sur l’observation de terrain. L’exposition propose des objets historiques ayant appartenu à Fleuriau et aux deux pères français de la cristallographie, Romé de L’Isle et Haüy.

Autour de Fleuriau, une approche ludique et didactique du monde minéral permet à tous de découvrir ce qu’est un cristal et un minéral. L’exposition de minéraux et d’instruments de mesures est associée à des jeux, des manipulations, des observations macro et microscopiques. Les visiteurs s’initient à la minéralogie, l’exposition les guide à identifier des formes géométriques simples, des caractéristiques évidentes (couleur, poids, forme évocatrices) afin de caractériser et d’identifier quelques minéraux essentiels.

The Symposium will be held in Fortaleza/CE, Brazil to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography and will be the first event on crystallography in the Northeast which will congregate, from all over the world, professionals and students working in all the major areas of knowledge of materials characterization that use X-ray, electrons and neutrons diffraction.

The AONSA Neutron Schools provide training for newcomers to neutron scattering across the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, materials science and more. As well as lectures, they include practical sessions with hands-on experiments and data analysis. All neutron techniques are generally covered, notably powder diffraction, single-crystal diffraction, strain scanning, small-angle scattering, reflectometry, inelastic and quasielastic scattering.

The 6th AONSA Neutron School will be held in Indonesia as part of the celebrations for the International Year of Crystallography. After the opening ceremony, general lectures on crystallography using X-ray and neutron (the history, the impact on sciences and the future challenging issues) will be given by Prof. John White (Australian National University, Australia) and Prof. Takeshi Kamiyama (KEK/J-PARC, Japan).

The lecture "Aux confins de la matière, La cristallographie et ses applications" by Professor J. Wouters will take place in the Acinapolis, University of Namur, as part of  the 20th Festival Nature Namur.

Symposium organized by the National Committee for Crystallography - 15 October 2014 - Academy Palace Brussels

The organisers aim to promote interdisciplinary contacts between Belgian scientists operating in different fields of structural analysis. Therefore the organisers welcome poster contributions in all fields of condensed matter chemistry and physics, life sciences, material sciences, earth sciences, pharmaca, synchrotron radiation, neutron sources. Lecturers include T. Bergfors, E. Alekseev, J. Hadermann, L. Aerts and Y. Kerremans.

Various methods for structural studies, such as X-ray crystallography (PX), X-ray small angle scattering (SAXS), cryoEM and molecular simulation, have been evolved very rapidly in the last decade. Combinations of these techniques reveal dynamic aspect of the molecular mechanism of biological macromolecular complexes based on the atomic structures.

This symposium celebrates the International Year of Crystallography (IYCr) in 2014 and will highlight several recent results on structural studies on membrane proteins and huge protein complexes by X-ray crystallography together with recent advance of important techniques for structural life sciences.

Science Festival is an event dedicated to popularization and promotion of science, culture and art in the Siedlce Region. 1. Crystallography yesterday, today and tomorrow - Prof. nzw. dr hab. inż. Zbigniew Karczmarzyk, Department of Organic Chemistry, Institute of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science UPH (lecture, 45 minutes).

2. How to look inside the crystal? - Dr Waldemar Wysocki, Department of Organic Chemistry, Institute of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science UPH (lecture connect with a presentation; 45 minutes).

3. The exhibition “In the unusual world of crystals” shows the beauty of crystals, the history of their investigations and their various applications. The exhibition was organized to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography IYCr2014 and the 650th Jubilee of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

The exhibition will be presented on 16 - 19 October 2014. Hallway near Lecture Hall No. 3 at the Faculty of Sciences. Guides to the exhibition will be Prof. nzw. dr hab. inż. Zbigniew Karczmarzyk and Dr Waldemar Wysocki of the Institute of Chemistry UPH.

4. The presentation of minerals and crystals of various chemicals and crystal structure models.

5. The unsual state of matter - liquid crystals, Dr Arkadiusz Rudzki, Department of Technology of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Institute of Chemistry and Faculty of Science UPH.

6. Presentation research methods of liquid crystals, Dr Arkadiusz Rudzki, Department of Technology of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Institute of Chemistry and Faculty of Science UPH.

The exhibition tours through all of the federal states of Austria. This tour stop takes place at the city of Schattendorf in Burgenland, located directly at the border to Hungary.

After the official opening on the 22th of October, there will be hourly guided tours for school classes and general public through the exhibition during opening times (8:00-18:00) until the 25th of October.

Furthermore, at this occasion, it will also be possible to get the Austrian commemorative postage stamp celebrating IYCr (which is shown at http://www.iycr2014.org/events/postage_stamps/austrian-stamp). It was produced to honour the famous Austrian mineralogist and crystallographer Felix Machatschki. There will be a limited emission of the special envelope with special postmarks adapted to time and place of the event.

As part of the initiatives for IOYCr2014 celebrations at FCT-NOVA, on Wednesday, 29 October 2014, Professor Maria Teresa Duarte will give a lecture entitled "Unveiling a new world of pharmaceuticals and bioinspired frameworks" at the library auditorium.

Biography:
Professor Maria Teresa Duarte got a Chemical Engineering Degree from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST, Lisbon) in 1983 and a PhD in Chemistry in 1989 from the same Institute; she received her Habilitation in Chemistry in 2007 at IST.
She started her professional career at IST in 1980 as Demonstrator, Teaching Assistant (1983-89), Assistant Professor and Associate Professor with tenior (1995-2007). She is presently Associate Professor with habilitation. She has been a Fulbright and Humboldt grantee and a post- doctoral Fellow at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt (1994- 95). She has been an invited researcher in different Universities in England, USA, Italy, and France. She has been involved on several Institutional assignments and University Management: She is presently Vice-President of the Scientific Board of IST since January 2007, and was IST delegate to CLUSTER (Leading Universities of Science and Technology), 2005-12. In 2004, she received a prize from the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia,  “Estímulo à Excelência” awarded to those scientists with high scientific productivity. She is member of diverse Scientific Societies and member of different International Commissions. She has coordinated different research Projects, published 5 Book Chapters with International distribution, one International Patent and has co-authored more than 200 papers in International Journals with peer review, and has presented more than 250 communications at International Conferences.

PROGRAMME

• growth and characterization of single crystal semiconductor materials under terrestrial and space conditions
• simulation of material and heat transport in metal and semiconductor melts
• synthesis, structure analysis and chrystal chemistry of new ternary and multinary compounds
• defect characterisation and detector development at synchrotron light sources
• teaching of crystallography and materials sciences

Invited speakers

A game for schoolchildren is organized over the Halloween weekend at the CRISTALLI! exhibit in Parma. Kids will have to answer questions about crystals and they will have to look for the answers around the exhibit. They will win a Diploma of Expert Crystallographer, a mineral, and the IUCr/IYCr gadgets.
