Description | Many initiatives have been and are being organized to involve schoolchildren at Mudaliarpet, Pondicherry (India) into crystallography on the occasion of IYCr2014. 1. At first, the students were given a brief introduction on various crystals, which made them think about how crystals are formed. 2. Following this, a team of students were selected for a project on Crystal Growth - investigating the size, shape and number of crystals formed, taking various substances such as table salt, sugar, epsom salt, borax, potassium nitrate and alum. 3. A Radio Talk was given by the teacher and the students on the "International Year of Crystallography". 4. A lecture was given on the topic to the school students, following which a demonstration -cum- exhibition, along with a poster presentation by the teacher is to be arranged for view for the public around the school locale. 5. A next attempt to telecast the above in the television is made. 6. Students of our school are participating in the IYCr2014 Crystal Growing Competition. |

The beauty of crystals - gemstones, snowflakes, grains of sugar and salt - has intrigued us since ancient times. Only in the early 20th century did X-rays allow one to "see" the regular arrangement of atoms in crystalline materials. 2014, the UN's International Year of Crystallography, marks the centenary of the discovery of X-ray diffraction, a very significant finding that led to many advances in science: from the structure of diamonds and DNA, to cocoa butter in chocolate, there's certainly much to Bragg about!

Event Name | ACA Summer Course in Chemical Crystallography |
Start Date | 7th Jul 2014 |
End Date | 16th Jul 2014 |
Duration | 10 days |
Description | The ACA Summer Course in Chemical Crystallography is a program that is now into its third decade of instruction here in the United States. The current incarnation of the course is directed towards Single-Crystal Chemical Crystallography and Powder Diffraction techniques, as applicable to small molecule studies. The course is designed to instruct attendees in the theory and practice of these two aspects of crystallography. The course is held every summer, in even years at The University of Notre Dame, and in odd years at Northwestern University. No prior knowledge of crystallography is expected from attendees. However, a good understanding of undergraduate level chemistry, physics and mathematics is desirable. While the course is geared towards graduate level attendees, applications from strong undergraduate students will be considered. Past course attendees have included faculty members and industrial researchers. |

Start Date | 17th Jul 2014 6:00pm |

Duration | N/A |
Description | In the framework of the celebrations for the UN International Year of Crystallography at the University of Melbourne, Professor Michael Parker will present a public lecture at the Bio21 Institute in Melbourne, Parkville, Australia on the topic "Shining a light on Alzheimer's disease through X-ray crystallography". Abstract: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common and devastating age-related disease with no effective disease-modifying treatments. Approximately, 34 million people worldwide are currently afflicted by AD and its prevalence is expected to triple over the next 40 years as people live longer. The mechanisms by which the disease progresses to cognitive decline in the sufferer are complex and not fully understood. A defining pathological feature is the deposition of extracellular plaques in the brain composed primarily of a peptide called amyloid beta (Aβ): a proteolytic breakdown product of the much larger Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). Most pharmaceutical activity in AD research has focused on Aβ, its generation and clearance from the brain. Professor Michael Parker is Deputy Director of St. Vincent's Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne where he heads its Structural Biology Laboratory and the ACRF Rational Drug Discovery Centre. He is an NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow and a Professorial Fellow at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Bio21 Institute, Melbourne University. |

Event Name | Farbe Einmal Anders: Photonische Kristalle In Natur Und Forschung |
Start Date | 23rd Jul 2014 6:30pm |
End Date | |
Duration | N/A |

Start Date | 26th Jul 2014 10:00am |
End Date | 29th Aug 2014 5:00pm |
Duration | 34 days and 7 hours |
Description | Reflections: tales from within the crystalSchool of Chemistry, The University of Melbourne, Parkville, Victoria, AustraliaCrystals have long captivated humankind, from ancient healing remedies and myth and legend, to modern fashion trends and industrial applications. Scientific interest in crystals was piqued over 400 years ago by Johann Kepler who detailed the beautiful symmetry of ice crystals. By the 20th century, scientists discovered that X-rays could be used to determine the arrangement of the atoms which comprise the crystal, creating the field of Crystallography. This exhibition celebrates the International Year of Crystallography bringing together crystal specimens, models and instruments used throughout history to solve the mysteries that lie within the crystal. |

Start Date | 31st Jul 2014 9:00am |
End Date | 31st Jul 2014 5:20pm |
Duration | 8 hours and 20 minutes |
