Event Name 4th Turkish National Crystallographic Meeting
Start Date 16th May 2014
End Date 19th May 2014
Duration 4 days
Description
The 4th National Congress of Crystallography (TUCr2014) and “Residual Stress Analysis by X-Ray Diffraction and Texture” workshop hosted by Dicle University in Diyarbakir will be carried out on 16 to 19 May 2014.

As you know, 2014 has been declared as the International Year of Crystallography by the UN (United Nations). Centenary of the birth of modern crystallography will be celebrated all over the world with symposiums, meetings, workshops and exhibitions held throughout the year. In this context, TUCr2014 is of particular importance for us and it has been listed in IYCr2014’s official page of events to be held in the world.

We invite all researchers and scientists who study in different fields including physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, materials, archeology and mineralogy and use X-ray techniques in their studies to attend and contribute our meeting. We hope TUCr2014 meeting will be a platform to increase recognition of crystallography in the public sphere, lead to national and international collaboration opportunities among participants and encourage young researchers working in this area.

It is also planned to realize a workshop titled as "Residual Stress and Texture Analysis by X-ray Diffraction” for graduate and doctoral students during the meeting. In this workshop courses and practical issues will be discussed. Students who will participate in the workshop and the meeting will be able to get support through TUBITAK.

We expect your attention and contribution to our meeting

Event Name An experiment on crystallography
Start Date 4th Mar 2014 9:00am
End Date 30th Nov 2014 4:00pm
Duration 271 days and 7 hours
Description

Many initiatives have been and are being organized to involve schoolchildren at Mudaliarpet, Pondicherry (India) into crystallography on the occasion of IYCr2014.

1. At first, the students were given a brief introduction on various crystals, which made them think about how crystals are formed.

2. Following this, a team of students were selected for a project on Crystal Growth - investigating the size, shape and number of crystals formed, taking various substances such as table salt, sugar, epsom salt, borax, potassium nitrate and alum.

3. A Radio Talk was given by the teacher and the students on the "International Year of Crystallography".

4. A lecture was given on the topic to the school students, following which a demonstration -cum- exhibition, along with a poster presentation by the teacher is to be arranged for view for the public around the school locale.

5. A next attempt to telecast the above in the television is made.

6. Students of our school are participating in the IYCr2014 Crystal Growing Competition.

The festival was initiated by Novosibirsk State University and Akademgorodok Foundation. General partner of the festival is Dynasty Foundation.

"Discovery phenomenon" was chosen as the main theme for this year. Thus we intend to substantiate the significance of scientific discoveries as well as the discoveries which we make every day whilst adapting to the fast changes of our surrounding world. It is also worth to focus the attention of the young audience on the attractiveness of science, as a way of doing and thinking, in order to generate interest to their future work in scientific field.

Sciences of the year: crystallography, physics, chemistry, biology, engineering sciences, cosmology, astrophysics, paleontology, educational psychology, hybrid pedagogic.

The comprehensive festival program includes more than 15 public lectures, seminars and panel discussions in the science café as well as in the University campus; science slam, which involves a "scientific battle" between young scientists; a training-conference on education and the professions of the future “Beyong the classroom”. Finally the most substantial program slot will be the outdoor event in  a  science picnic manner - "Archimedes Town" - which covers “fair of scientific discoveries” (20-25 tent-labs present their scientific researches), scientific auditorium for short speeches from selected experts, also experimental polygons for physics, chemistry and biology, mobile planetarium, exhibition area, scientific cinema etc.

Description

The International Year of Crystallography IYCr2014 at Siena

(L'Anno Internazionale della Cristallografia IYCr2014 a Siena)

Organizers: Regione Toscana, Amico Museo 2014
Venue: 19 May 2014, 4:30 pm, Aula Magna, Accademia dei Fisiocritici, Siena, Piazzetta Silvio Gigli (Prato di Sant'Agostino) 2

Three teachers of the University of Siena will give an introduction to crystallography and its applications in biology, materials science, mineralogy and art. From a scientific point of view, one of the most interesting properties of crystals is the fact that, when exposed to X-rays, they will produce a ("diffraction") image which allows us to see (literally!) the structures formed by the atoms and molecules they are made from.
