End Date 30th Nov 2014 4:00pm
Duration 271 days and 7 hours
Description

Many initiatives have been and are being organized to involve schoolchildren at Mudaliarpet, Pondicherry (India) into crystallography on the occasion of IYCr2014.

1. At first, the students were given a brief introduction on various crystals, which made them think about how crystals are formed.

2. Following this, a team of students were selected for a project on Crystal Growth - investigating the size, shape and number of crystals formed, taking various substances such as table salt, sugar, epsom salt, borax, potassium nitrate and alum.

3. A Radio Talk was given by the teacher and the students on the "International Year of Crystallography".

4. A lecture was given on the topic to the school students, following which a demonstration -cum- exhibition, along with a poster presentation by the teacher is to be arranged for view for the public around the school locale.

5. A next attempt to telecast the above in the television is made.

6. Students of our school are participating in the IYCr2014 Crystal Growing Competition.

Event Name 5th Meeting X-ray and other techniques in investigations of the objects of cultural heritage
Start Date 14th May 2014
End Date 17th May 2014
Duration 4 days
Description

The preservation and conservation of our cultural heritage is a significant contemporary worldwide concern. Advanced scientific methods and techniques are essential for the identification of materials present in historic objects of cultural heritage and processes occurring therein. These methods can also help to give a deeper understanding of the technology and craftsmanship of old masters. Modern analytic methods are important in studies of authenticity and can be applied as diagnostic techniques in practical conservation.
The aim of the conference is to promote the development and use of X-ray and other modern techniques in order to extract information from objects of cultural heritage. The conference is also a forum to bring together scientists whose major expertise is in a high-tech field and museum professionals (art historians, conservators and curators) whose particular responsibility is the organization and preservation of collections, and to disseminate the newest results in the area of scientific investigation of art objects.

The first session of the conference entitled “Role of crystallography in science, art and everyday life” was opened for general public and was preceded by presentation of the Plus Ratio Quam Vis Medal to Professor Henk Schenk, past President of the International Union of Crystallography.

The conference was attended by over 90 participants.

The International Year of Crystallography IYCr2014 at Siena

(L'Anno Internazionale della Cristallografia IYCr2014 a Siena)

Organizers: Regione Toscana, Amico Museo 2014
Venue: 19 May 2014, 4:30 pm, Aula Magna, Accademia dei Fisiocritici, Siena, Piazzetta Silvio Gigli (Prato di Sant'Agostino) 2

Three teachers of the University of Siena will give an introduction to crystallography and its applications in biology, materials science, mineralogy and art. From a scientific point of view, one of the most interesting properties of crystals is the fact that, when exposed to X-rays, they will produce a ("diffraction") image which allows us to see (literally!) the structures formed by the atoms and molecules they are made from.

Event Name Lecture by Doctor João Morais Cabral at FCT-NOVA
Start Date 28th May 2014 12:00pm
End Date
Duration N/A
Description

As part of the lecture series to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography at FCT-NOVA, on May 28, Dr João Morais Cabral (IBMC, Porto) will give a talk entitled "A molecular study of a component of the bacterial machinery involved in hyperosmotic adaptation".

Prof Cabral's challenging research includes the structure of KtrAB (Nature, 496, 323-8, 2013), which is a bacterial K+/Na* transporter that is involved in the first steps of adaptation to hyperosmotic shock. This process involves signaling by ATP/ADP and a change in the conformation of the transporter. Dr. João Cabral will present the crystal structure of the KtrABATP transporter and will describe biochemical and functional experiments that reveal details of the molecular mechanism of transport activation.

  5:45 pm  Special student talks

7:00 pm  Official opening of the exhibition

Abstract

The talks “Crystals, Symmetries and Quasi-Crystals” form the opening ceremony of an exhibition along with activities of the 2014 UNESCO year of crystallography at which we celebrate the 100thbirthday of the awarding the Nobel Price in Physics to the deciphering of the inner structure of crystals due to X-ray diffraction.

In our talks, we highlight the main steps leading to today’s under-standing of crystalline structures and their symmetries by discussing the ground-breaking discoveries of the last centuries: Stenos Law, classifications of planar and spatial packings, and X-ray diffraction. In particular the role of symmetries is outlined and why only certain rotations are allowed in crystals and others are strictly forbidden, like 5-fold rotations. To the great surprise of the scientific community exactly such a forbidden 5-fold rotation symmetry was realized in an alloy crystal in the 1980s. We illustrate why this is possible and what further types of forbidden symmetries occur in crystalline structures now known as quasi-crystals. For solving the riddle of the quasi-crystals the 2011 Nobel Price in Chemistry was awarded.

Special talks by students of Applied Geosciences at GUtech dedicated to the deeper understanding of certain topics round up the evening, before the exhibition is officially opened.

Description Structural Basis of Pharmacology. Deeper Understanding of Drug Discovery through Crystallography.

Diseases, from bacterial and viral infections to cancer to chronic maladies, are still among the greatest problems for mankind, in spite of tremendous progress in genetics, biology, and chemistry. Approaches to developing new treatments have changed over time, and so have the methodologies used, in order to solve the varied, new, challenging problems that may happen on the path to drug discovery. Together with ever-evolving experimental techniques, a variety of computational approaches have been applied at the various stages of the drug design process, and in the past two decades structure-based drug design has become one of the mainstream approaches. This method can be used to target protein-ligand and protein-protein interactions and nowadays is applicable to all aspects of drug discovery, including lead identification, lead optimization, ADMET prediction, and drug repurposing. The purpose of the course is dual:

1) It will provide a review of the fundamentals and the application of crystallography to drug design, and an evaluation of the technology at the present state.

2) It will review the progress in this field and summarize the application and results to current fields of interest.
